Spain - Fashion Programme 2021
Japan is world famous for its fashion scene, a highly diversified sartorial genre that merges avant-garde looks with pop culture and is led by exhilarating and ever-evolving subcultures such as mori (ethereal forest girls), gyaru (youthful and glamorous), Lolita (cute Victorian-inspired clothing), Shibuya (street style from Tokyo’s Shibuya mall), Harajuku (street style from the ultra-fashionable Harajuku district) and cosplay (role-play costumes).
As well as a deep-dive into the exciting metropolis of Tokyo, this programme gives students the opportunity to explore the different areas of Japan that define this very diverse fashion scene and to meet with some of the country’s most iconic brands. Students will also be introduced to the culture that drives this very eclectic and unique fashion landscape, from its rich history and stunning architecture, through to its delicious food and “genki”!
Guided by fashionistas and through meeting a diverse selection of professionals from across the fashion industry, the group will be given an unrivalled insight into the fashion world of Japan.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Tokyo: Meet representative of Eden Travel International at Tokyo Airport arrivals and transfer to the hotel.
Welcome Dinner Event: As an induction into the Tokyo design scene, the group will spend their first dinner with a Senior Fashion Designer from Tokyo - their Fashion Guide while in Tokyo.
Day 2
Tokyo Fashion District and Brand Tour: The group will spend a day exploring Tokyo’s most famous fashion districts to give you all the inside knowledge - from dissecting Japan’s distinct fashion culture to understanding the historic and current role these districts play in the global world of fashion.
Students will also have the opportunity to meet with some iconic fashion brands, to understand about what it means to have and run a fashion business in Japan.
Day 3 - 4
Tokyo Fashion and Design Museums: As well as continuing to meet with various fashion professionals and brands, days 3 and 4 will also be spent exploring some of Japan’s most important fashion and design museums. Will such an amazing array to choose from, these will be hand selected based on the group’s core interests. Examples include:

Full day visit Yayoi Kusama Museum
Day 5 - 6
Mount Fuji Overnight Trip: No trip to Tokyo would be complete without a view of Mont Fuji.
Lake Kawaguchiko: The group will travel from Tokyo to Hakone on Day 5, stopping to enjoy the stunning vistas from Lake Kawaguchiko and, if time permits, the wonders of Hakone Hot Springs.
Kubota Ichiku Art Museum: The group will begin their education into the infamous KIMONO and the culture that surrounds this iconic fashion item.
Mount Fuji: Japan’s most iconic symbol. It is not only the country’s tallest mountain, it contributes to Japan's physical, cultural, and spiritual geography.
Travel to Kyoto: After Mount Fuji, the group will take the Shinkansen to Kyoto (about 2 hours)
Day 7
Kyoto: Kyoto is the cultural and historical heart of Japan, complete with sublime Zen gardens, mysterious Buddhist temples, colourful Shinto shrines and graceful geisha. Over two days, the group will explore the city’s most important fashion and cultural destinations.
The Kyoto Costume Institute京都服装学院: Thought to be one of the top fashion museums in the world, the KCI’s collection currently ranges from the 17th century to the present day, with holdings of 12,000 items of clothing and 16,000 documents. The institute has received donations from some of today’s top designers and fashion houses such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and was presented with a gift of approximately 1,000 sets of clothing from Comme des Garçons.
Nishijin Textile Center西阵织: The Nishijin Textile Center is the central sight in Kyoto’s traditional weaving district, Nishijin. Here you can see some traditional looms being operated by old Nishijin ladies and catch a kimono fashion show – in which a series are superb kimono are modelled.
Arashiyama & Sagano Bamboo Forest: Pictures of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine are among the most iconic of Japan, but no picture can capture the feeling of standing in the midst of this sprawling bamboo grove – the whole thing has a palpable sense of otherness that is quite unlike that of any normal forest we know of.
Fushumi Inari Taisha: This intriguing shrine was dedicated to the god of rice and sake by the Hata clan in the 8th century. The magical, seemingly unending path of over 5000 vibrant orange torii gates that wind through the hills behind Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine makes it one of the most popular shrines in Japan.
Return flight: After lunch on Day 8, the group will transfer to Osaka airport for return flight.
